Sustainability Working Group

The sector is unique in construction in so far as buildings will typically have over 30 fit-outs in their lifetime.  Each re-fit fundamentally impacts sustainability both in relation to the embodied carbon and the operational performance of that building.  The FIS Sustainability Leadership Group is focussed on helping members develop sustainable businesses and deliver sustainable projects and buildings.

What is the FIS Sustainability Working Group?

The FIS Sustainability Working Group was formed to support FIS committment to taking a pro-active lead, not just in supporting the UK ambition to net zero carbon by 2050, but delivering profound transformation within our supply chain on all aspects of ethical and environmental sustainability.

This group is open to experts from within the FIS community and invited guests.  Our work on sustainability is focussed on five key areas:

  • Influencing design and procurement
  • Increasing understanding and expertise on all aspects of sustainability
  • Setting targets and supporting standardisation of data collection
  • Creating an open network to share best practice, collate and create supporting resources
  • Highlighting individuals and approaches that help inspire and inform change

In September 2021 FIS decided to invest in a part time Sustainability Champion, Flavie Lowres to support an organisational approach and individual member journeys.  Flavie is the staff lead for the Sustainability Working Group.

Date of Next Meeting

The next meeting of the group is to be announced soon.  Meetings are open to nominated members of the FIS Working Group and invited guests (prior confirmation of attendance is essential).  If you are interested in getting involved, email flavielowres@thefis.org

We have to start thinking differently, rather than thinking of buildings or interiors as the end product, we have to think about every building as a kind of DIY store for the next project and the next project and the next project. We are keen to work with members of the FIS through this database and wider initiatives to help realise our values and support transformation of the supply chain as a whole.
