V&A Museum East, Stratford
The Project
The V&A Museum East project involved the design and installation of high-performing acoustic ceilings across the fourth-floor gallery, stairwells, and general access areas, with a particular focus on the complex geometry of the spaces. The installation was crucial for managing reverberation time in high-traffic public areas while maintaining the Museum’s high aesthetic standards.
The most challenging aspect was constructing bespoke, prismatic-shaped ceiling panels across small lobbies on staircases. These required precise site setting out due to their downward-sloping surfaces and changing angles. The brief demanded absolute continuity, ensuring the coffer groin lines carry through from point to point across each bay. This necessitated an intensive design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA) process, utilising a highly skilled site team to achieve a flawless, architecturally integrated acoustic solution that meets the demands of a world-class cultural institution.
Scope of Works
- Design & Engineering: Design development and engineering of the bespoke high-performance acoustic ceiling system,
- Acoustic System Provision: Supply and installation of specialized high-performance acoustic ceiling materials and components.
- Geometrically Complex Fabrication: Setting out and construction of prismatic-shaped ceiling panels with bespoke dimensions, changing angles, and sloped profiles.
- Integration with Structure: Building and mounting the ceiling system over and around challenging structural elements, including stairwells and small lobby spaces.
- Aesthetic Alignment: Ensuring precise alignment of panel joints and visual lines to maintain seamless continuity across multiple planes and changing angles as per the architectural design intent.
- Finishing & Detailing: All final finishing and detailing to meet the high aesthetic standards required for a landmark public building.
