St Mary's Chapel - Mither Kirk Enabling Work Phase 2, Aberdeen
The Project
North Group were appointed as the main contractor on a historical restoration project within Aberdeen. Collaborating with OpenSpace Trust and GRAS Architects to complete the second phase restoration of the 15th century St Mary’s Chapel. This rare medieval vaulted Chapel is of particular importance and is part of the Kirk of St Nicholas, a category A listed building of great architectural and historic significance.
As part of the second phase of the restoration it involved removing all the gypsum-based plaster to the walls and ceilings, prepare and re-pointing stonework and finish in lime-based plaster.
Areas of original carved wood panels to the lower walls were carefully removed, taken back to our joinery workshop to be restored and repaired using new French oak to match original. The panels were then carefully reinstated to allow for the French polishing works to be carried out on-site using traditional methods. New sections of French oak panelling were also created to blend in with the existing finishes.
Repairs to the East Kirk external double doors, the manufacture of a new arched head door using original methods complete with new custom-made bespoke ironmongery were also complete.
The electrical works to the chapel were re-wired complete with new and more appropriate lighting.
The intricacy of the works was undertaken with careful consideration to the fabrics of the Chapel, working closely with OpenSpace Trust, GRAS Architects, archaeologists and our specialist sub-contractors.
