Piccadilly Theatre, London
The Project
The Ambassador Theatre Group under took to bring back their original scheme and refurbish the main dome which has been covered up for many years.
The works included a full redecoration and re-construction of the EML rendered ceiling and the surrounding original fibrous plaster works.
Hayles and Howe were approached to help design a methodology to reconstruct the dome by filling in all the large holes and repairing the damaged caused over the years. The dome was covered with a large metal grid which supported all the theatre spot lights and other technical equipment. This was removed and a platform was put in place to enable the works to proceed.
There were many technical challenges during the project including plasterer’s ellipses using old techniques along with manufacturing, installing a new access points in the ceiling for future shows, designing new features for the ceiling, consolidating the lattice cove, and surrounding lighting troughs within a very strict timeline of 4-6 weeks.
The theatre is now back to its original beautiful design, provides the theatre with better light, ambience, and feel when watching the shows.
