Northern Lincolnshire & Goole NHS Foundation Trust

The Project

NHS Lincolnshire Trust contacted Architectural Wallsz (AWallsz) office in late December 2020 to discuss Healthcare segregation Pods for two hospitals within the Trust (Scunthorpe and Grimsby). The AWallsz Team responded very quickly and visited site the next day. The brief was to design and build 14 negative air pressure Pods to segregate Covid-19 patients from other patients within the same ward.
Both Hospitals were under severe pressure due to Covid-19 and nearly at full bed capacity for infected patients. The Estates and clinical Team recognised that segregation pods that could isolate Covid-19 patients would significantly improve their infection prevention and control of the virus.
The challenges for the AWallsz Team were:
– to meet the ventilation requirements of negative air pressure rooms with a minimum of 10 air changes per hour
– the Pods had to comply with hospital fire regulations
– moving beds within narrow corridors within 4 bed bays
– only one 4 bed bay could be released at a time for construction
