BAFTA, London
The Project
An original ceiling hidden and not known about for more than 50 years was discovered from a leak. From this, two other skylights were investigated where BAFTA discovered two more extraordinarily beautiful plaster rooflights, two of which were original to the building in 1856. Fine Art Mouldings were commissioned to investigate and survey the conditions of these rooflights, produce a timeline and report of their history and advise on future reinstatement.
Unfortunately, the rooflights couldn’t remain due to health and safety issues. Fine Art Mouldings surveyed and took all the information they required using cutting edge technology. These rooflights were reinstated, with also keeping some of the original and piecing it back in bit by bit where safe to do so.
The finished result is truly a beautiful place for future stars to enjoy at BAFTA and we are very proud of it.
Scope of Works
– Surveying rooflights (3D laser technology and online mapping of an area, photographs, noting down very specific characteristics of each rooflight in order to estimate age, taking samples of organic leftover material, research)
-Written reports on the history of the rooflights and advice on reinstatement.
– Careful removal of existing plasterwork whilst carrying out further serves
– Creation of the bespoke plasterwork in our workshop in Essex
– Transportation and fixing of new plasterwork on site to a newly lifted rooflight exactly as before.
– Finish and leave ready for decoration.
