Training and forms of Continued Professional Development (CPD) are vital for any person who wishes to maintain high standards of work, improve on working techniques, and develop new skills.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the importance of CPD cannot be understated and FIS encourage everyone to undertake some form of training if possible. Not only will training keep your skills sharp in the leadup to normal working patterns, but it also provides an opportunity to better your working habits and develop yourself professionally and personally.

What is the law surrounding training whilst furloughed?
Government legislature states the following:
“If employees are required to complete any job-related training while they are on furlough leave (which is permitted as long as it doesn’t involve them in providing services to, or generating revenue for or on behalf of their organisation) they should be paid at least the National Minimum Wage rate.”
This means that all forms of training are permitted so long as they meet the following criteria:
- The learner does not carry out any work-related task as part of their training i.e. moving materials on site as part of a manual handling course or creating a document during project management training that may be used for the business at a later date.
- The learner continues to receive their furlough pay OR in cases where furlough pay is lower than national minimum wage, their furlough pay must be subsidised by the business to meet national minimum wage.
