Re Making Beamish 1950's Cinema, Stanley
The Project
Ornate Interiors were first contacted by Cassandra Robson of Beamish Museum in February 2018 to meet on site at the original cinema in Ryhope, Sunderland to advise on the possibility of removing and re-installing the existing plaster features to the re-located cinema in Beamish Museum.
Time moved on and when the contract came out to tender in July 2023, we were advised that all the original plasterwork had been demolished and removed from site without any site sections or dimensions of the existing plasterwork being retained.
Ornate Interiors tendered the project and were awarded the contract in May 2023.
Ornate Interiors faithfully re-created in fibrous plaster the balcony front, proscenium arch, lead window features and the high-level frieze mouldings to the cinema wings from photographs and a digital survey of the interior of the building undertaken by Space Architects.
Drawings and sketch profiles of the new plasterwork were undertaken and submitted for approval before new clay models and moulds of the ornamental features were put into production.
The new fibrous plaster sections were cast in our Leeds workshop and transported to site for installation.
We completed our installation on the 24th April 2024.
