On Thursday CITB published its new research report Migration and Construction which shows construction employers want greater simplicity and breathing space on planned visa restrictions following the UK’s departure from the EU. The report finds that just 3% of construction employers have the necessary experience in handling visa applications, with two-thirds saying that the process is difficult. Responding to this, industry has asked for the following from a new post-Brexit migration system:
- An extension of the ‘low-skilled’ visa from 12 to 24 months
- The ability for non UK-born workers to train to remain in the UK
- A new model of ‘Umbrella Sponsorship’ to allow self-employed non-UK workers to continue to come and work in the UK
We are engaging closely with officials across Whitehall to explain the benefits of the industry’s recommended approach.
