This week the Migration Advisory Committee’s MAC published its review of the shortage occupation list (SOL). The review recognises the skills shortages in construction and that construction will require careful consideration in a future immigration system. The MAC has included construction as a sector that has a number of roles in shortage that don’t meet the skill criteria to be included in the current SOL. The Home Office is not obligated to accept the MAC recommendations. Developments are ongoing and subject to change as the Brexit process continues. FIS remains concerned about the implications on construction if the criteria is rigidly applied without regard for the recognised shortages and continues to work with Build UK and other bodies from across the construction sector to work with Home Office on a solution.
